El Amarna

A small sixth Dynasty Egyptian passenger ship from 2350 B.C. The sail on this ship was triangular in shape and made of linen. The point of the triangle was secured with a rope to the copper loop seen slightly forward of the mast on the deck. Bipod and tripod masts were common at this time in Egypt because the ships were not sturdy enough to support the concentrated weight and pressure of a single pole mast.
