Ulu Burun
This Canaanite ship dating to 1350 B.C. was found wrecked off the coast of Turkey by underwater archaeologists in 1982. This type of deep water merchant ship was active in the Mediterranean at this time (1350 BC ).
The underwater wreck site was carefully excavated by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology from Texas A & M University. The carver , David Warther, has long been a member of INA and he keeps current with the finds and research at INA and other acrhaeological groups. The amount of available information from ancient wrecks impacts his ability to re-create the ships in miniature art form.
This wrecksite was known for its' large cache of copper " oxhide shaped " ingots.
Steering assembly as seen through the ivory rigging. Corral area was to hold cargo together in the center of the ship .
